A Confluence of Cultures

After the abolition of slavery in the 19th century, indentured laborers from India were brought to several Caribbean territories, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.  Over generations, Indian communities preserved elements of:

• Hindu and Muslim religious traditions
• Cuisine (roti, curry, doubles)
• Music and tassa drumming
• Festivals such as Diwali and Phagwah

These traditions blended with African, Indigenous, and European influences creating the vibrant cultural mosaic we now recognize as Caribbean identity.  Caribbean Rootz honors that complexity with respect.
